Sweetgum

Liquidambar styraciflua

The sweet gum tree is a common tree across Seton Hill University’s campus. The most historically significant of these trees is the Robert E. Lee Sweetgum, planted in Seton Hill University’s Historic Grove on the main entrance hill. This tree was grown from a seed donated by the plantation where the famous Confederate general, Robert E. Lee, was born. The sweetgum tree is recognizable by the spiky fruit it produces each summer.
