Red Maple

Acer rubrum

Red maple trees are a type of maple tree that has a red feature for each season – buds in the winter, flowers in spring, leafstalks in summer, and leaves in autumn. The red maple has beautiful, brilliant foliage to show off in autumn (Arbor Day Foundation, 2018). Some red maples at Seton Hill University are planted in the Historic Grove on the main entrance hill. Red maples planted here were donated from the historic locations: Holy Cross and River Farm. Holy Cross is the oldest Catholic college in New England and River Farm was once the home of the United States of America’s first president, George Washington. Today, River Farm is the headquarters for the American Horticultural Society.  (Seton Hill University Archives)
