American Sycamore

Platanus occidentalis

Contrary to popular belief, there are only 4 American sycamore trees lining the entranceway to Seton Hill University. They are commonly confused with the London planetree, a hybrid of the American sycamore and the Oriental planetree (Arbor Day Foundation, 2018). This confusion occurs because sycamore trees have similar bark and leaves to their relative the London Planetree, but have shaggier bark that extends the length of the tree (left). The trees originally planted to line the drive up the Hill are London planetrees.
